As the Proverb says, "The tongue can bring death or life" (Proverbs 18:21). The words we use and when we choose to speak is important. But it is difficult to be objective about whether our speech is edifying or discouraging. That is where our spouse can help. Often we miss how other people perceive what we say. When we attempt to be kind and gentle, we may come across as overly demanding. Often our attempts to clarify an idea are seen as

Sometimes we can come across as overly forceful when we meant to be calm and gentle.

  1. Do your words edify and build each other spiritually and emotionally?

  2. Do you know whether your spouse wants you to get to the bottom line quickly or give more detail? Do you seek to understand what they are saying before you expect them to understand what you are saying?

  3. Do you ask for perspective from your spouse when you need to have a difficult conversation with someone?

Day 2 - Proverbs 18:21 The tongue can bring death or life; those who love to talk will reap the consequences.

Day 9 - Proverbs 17:27 A truly wise person uses few words; a person with understanding is even tempered. 

Day 16 - Proverbs 15:1 A gentle answer deflects anger, but harsh words make tempers flare.

Day 23 - Ecclesiastes 5:3 Too much activity gives you restless dreams; too many words make you a fool.
